First Bet (Updated 8/28/2011 6:30 PM)

Well the official first bet is the $1,000 on the over 11.5 season win total for the New England Patriots. Tonight, I am making my first bet of the season using the remaining $1,000. Let it be known that I am the biggest opponent of betting on preseason games… BUT this bet just seems like free money and it isn’t a traditional spread but rather a team prop.

So here it is… “Will there be any points scored in the first 7:30 of the Patriots vs. Lions game?” Yes (-165). Putting $165 on this should bring in my first $100 quite easily. Both offenses have looked unstoppable this preseason and I don’t expect much to change tonight. The winner of the coin toss will really dictate this, especially if the Lions win the coin toss. The Patriots new and improved pass rush could shut down the Lions and give the Patriots a long field. Other than that scenario, should be some easy money.

UPDATE (8/28/2011 6:26 PM) – The first half didn’t turn out to be the shootout I expected, but a win isn’t always pretty. After Matt Stafford hit Nate Burleson down the right sideline for a 37 yard completion with All-Pro corner Devin McCourty in coverage, Lions Kicker Jason Hansen knocked a 33 yarder through the uprights 2:38 into the first quarter. Score this one a victory for Jon.
